Fonda Mexican Winsdor • World’s Largest Outdoor Yum Cha

Fonda Mexican Windsor
The Mexican wave (oh god, I’m so sorry… that is the lamest thing ever and I wasn’t even intending to sound lame)… where was I, the Mexican food trend is far from over. Fonda’s original restaurant has been in Richmond for a while now, but I never had the chance to go and check it out. They recently opened their new premises in Windsor on the ever popular Chapel Street, and I was invited to check out the new digs on a secret opening night! I took my BFF Alana down with me, and whilst we both wanted to eat everything on the menu, we managed to settle on a few options to share between us.
I had one of the cocktail on offer, which was call a Mexican Standoff. It was a good mix of flavours, not too spicy from the chilli, and the coriander wasn’t over powering any flavours. It was very easy to drink 🙂 We shared corn, tacos and quesadillas. We were so full after it with couldn’t even fit in dessert which I really wanted to try. Alas, there is always next time!
Fish, pork and beef tacos were all pretty good. I’d have to say my favourite was the fish, as it seem to be lighter and have more refreshing flavours; however the pineapple on the pork one also worked really well. Fonda, like most places these days, don’t take bookings. So get in early or be prepared to wait. Go with a group of friends, get a range of stuff and share. I think that’s the best way to make the most of the menu here for sure!

Chan’s Worlds Largest Outdoor Yum Cha
As part of the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival, I was also invited to attempt to break Guinness World Records. Seriously, how could I say no to that?

It was held in Melbourne’s Treasury Gardens, by supermarket product, Chan’s Yum Cha at Home. There were over 750 patrons seated, and the stewards that recorded what everyone ate verified that 750 people ‘qualified’ as participants for the world record for the most people eating a yum cha meal outdoors. We all ate in excess of 7000 yum cha items. Yum cha hasn’t been the same since 😛

If you haven’t tried the prawn hargow by Chan’s, may I suggest, after reading this post of course, you go out and go buy some. They are SO good! Fat, juicy prawns, so tasty… I could eat them all day. And they are available at Coles, Woolies and Costco, so no excuses!

The sesame prawn toast were the most filling, I regretted eating so many of them. The ginger prawn dumplings and shitake dumplings were also great, but the hargow is still the bomb dot com of the dumplings! The number we had to be beat was 500, and Chan’s Yum Cha at Home beat that comfortably. In addition to the seated patrons a further estimated 500+ people attended the festival during the course of the day.

It was a great day out, perfect weather, traditional lion dancing, with a few cheeky lions! Traditional dance and music. I thought it was a really well put together event, considering they were catering for an epic amount of people at a sit down function. I wonder if I can put Guinness World Recorder holder on my CV 😉

Iron Chef Shellie and guest were invited to dine at Fonda Mexican as guests thanks to Little Big Marketing & PR. Iron Chef Shellie and guests were participants of the World’s Largest Outdoor Yum Cha thanks to Chan’s Take Home Yum Cha and Spice & Soul Marketing & PR.

I love Fonda in Richmond (as you say the fish tacos are the best) so keen to check out the Windsor version.
